Digital Video

Digital Video

Film is one of the growing number of mediums that has been infiltrated by the digital age. Not to say that classic analog film has lost its luster by any means, but the available equipment, editing programs, among other plus gives the digital side an edge over analog.

Beginning in the early 20th century, film making is the youngest yet most diverse and collaborative art forms of all time. One of the steps this newly formed media took was the formation of the Hollywood scene in the 1920’s and the introduction of sound to motion picture in 1927. The introduction of color in the late 50’s early 60’s progressed the mediums potential even more. Allowing for more accurate and creative construction of new worlds, or stories. After continuing refinement by the late 1960’s film making was starting to become recognized worldwide as an artistic medium. Directors were now being considered authors of the film.

The most obvious determent from using film as opposed to digital video is the cost. Film on average costs anywhere from 500 to 2,000 dollars per minute to develop professional grade film in this modern age. With digital, as long as you have hard drive space you can do as many takes and produce as much as you want without worry of financial overture. But with that digital comfort also comes disorganization and chaos. If the producer or film maker cannot effectively organize the many takes and versions they want, the film making process can become very slow and sloppy. The biggest thing film has over video is the quality. With digital video you can only get as much resolution as the screen you’re viewing it on allows. . Nothing can replace a pure chemical reaction to light on film stock.

Digital video became prevalent in the 1990’s coinciding with rise of digital photography. Both mediums were created to be accessible to the general consumer. Digital camcorders and cameras made it affordable and easy for the general public to create photos and videos. This was also good because the growing number of household PC’s at the time as well as general access to the internet, allowed for easy transfer of photos and videos. Digital video was also used within government sanctions as well as closed circuit television. As digital video’s technology grew greater, it became more acknowledged by professionals. Only within the fast 5 years have the majority of productions, whether consumer, post consumer, or professional, are shot in digital. Digital video is always trying to look like film never the other way around. Right now theres still no comparison to digital quality vs film. Within the digital realm you are still restricted by measurements, with regular film there is no way to measure a chemical reaction to light on film stock.

The introduction of the RED ONE was an important step in allowing digital to take over the majority. The RED ONE is an affordable camera thats about 20,000$ as opposed to the professional industry standard the Arri Alexa at around 80,000$. The rise of the DSLR has exploded within the last 4 years as well, the most notable being the Canon 5d mark 2, first consumer level SLR camera to have the same sensor size as a 35mm negative, have physically same image plane size as an analog camera. First to shoot 1080p digital video which has completely exploded the video industry.

I’d have to say that I almost completely agree with it. I think that technology has definitely infiltrated all corners of our being at this point. We are constantly surrounded by text messaging, instant and quick internet access through our phones and mobile hotspots. But at the same time I do not think technology is a bad thing. When used in moderation these devices can house information, projects, help us schedule our lives and stay connected to people in our lives. But at the same time we cannot be worried about staying minute by minute up to date with all the various social networking sites, which I think is the root of the problem.

I think that my generation of people in my general age group grew up in a very weird time for this, because depending on our immediate environment we could have experienced both ways of thinking growing up. I know personally sophmore year of high school was when I got my first cell phone and that changed my world and the way I communicated with friends. Soon after networking sites such as myspace, aol instant messenger and facebook became social standards and online gaming became immensely popular. Almost to the point that your image online represented you more than your visceral self image. I experienced all of these things and indulged in them extensively for quite a while. But as I was able to pull out of this digital reality and look at all of my friends, my younger siblings; get sucked into this new virtual reiality. Where friends of mine would rather play an online video game then come hang out with people they might not alongside friends. I saw people replacing physical reality, with the comfort of hiding behind this fake one. When friends would hang out and some individuals would rather text someone who might be in the same room or in the same building as them. The value of human interaction among younger generations are definitely becoming a lower priority.

In response to the dumbest nation segment of the show I feel as if its kinda the same thing. If we would all find the happy medium of moderation between staying connected and being productive, then we would be able to compliment the progress of technology rather than be distracted by it. I definitely do feel as though technology is hindering progress in the classroom. It seems as most of the people interviewed think that spreading out and “multi-tasking” less then averagely on everything is better than focusing on one thing and knocking it out.
